Haiti – Nan Lundi Community Water and Sanitation

Nan Lundi, Jeremie Region
Project Partner: Haiti Mission Inc.

Overview

Donors

Throughout Numero Deux in the Jeremie region of Haiti, three main areas remain a considerable distance from safe drinking water. One is within the environs of Jeremie itself and the other two are in Nan Lundi.

Approximately 400 residents, many also housing family and friends from Port-au-Prince, reside in each of the three locations. This project will provide this population with safe drinking water and sanitation.

Activities:

  • Drilling of 3 deep wells (cost* $11,500 per well)
  • Construction of 5 latrines (cost* $1,150 per latrine)

*Costs include (in Canadian dollars): water quality monitoring, hygiene education activities, water source committee training, project monitoring, reporting & partner coordination for WASH sustainability, all construction, drilling, materials and labour as required.

Updates:

  • July 30, 2012 – This project is now complete with 3 wells providing clean water and 5 new latrines, including 2 latrines for Kay en Rond School where a well was constructed in Phase 1.  While latrine building was a struggle, our partners and the community now have a good latrine design to work with for the future.   See the site list below for the communities benefitting from this project.
  • April 17, 2012 – The third well in the Nan Lundi area is now completed – all 3 wells are now providing clean water! The final 3latrines are also under construction, although there have been many challenges. Soil conditions have lead to difficulties with digging and lining the pits with cement. The soil, along with heavy rains, have caused the latrine pits to cave during construction. Additional cement liming is necessary which is taking additional time to complete with the heavy rain. A team from Haiti Mission Inc. from Louisiana is now in Haiti to visit and help the local team.
  • January 10, 2012 – Two wells at Nan Sannite and Numero Deux have now been completed. The well at Numero Deux is providing for a community of 40-50 families who live near the local airstrip. In the past, the women and children dangerously crossed the airstrip to collect water from a well about a kilometre away.

Kay en Rond school now has 2 new latrines in addition to a well that was constructed in 2008/2009. Thankfully, in the communities where wells have been constructed with Haiti Mission and Ryan’s Well, there have been fewer reports of cholera.
