Ghana – Community Water and Sanitation for Amansie West Phase 3

Donors

Continuing from Phase 2 and earlier Phase 1 projects in the Amansie West District of Ghana, we are now embarking on Phase 3. Our local partners at DONA are looking forward to continuing the momentum of Phase 2, completed in January 2011, to expand their work to additional communities and schools.

Activities:

  • Drilling and construction of 3 deep wells
  • Construction of 1 rainwater harvesting system
  • Construction of 2 VIP latrines and handwashing stations
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene education and training for local water committees and community members

*Costs include (in Canadian dollars): water quality monitoring, hygiene education activities, water source committee training, project monitoring, reporting & partner coordination for WASH sustainability, all construction, drilling, materials and labour as required.

Project Sites:

  • Apawkrom Beposo Community Well – completed to serve 450 people
  • Aboaso Community Well – completed to serve 335 people
  • Kofi Nantsie Community Well – completed to serve 609 people.
  • Ntinanko Primary A School Latrines and Rainwater Harvesting Tank – completed to serve 550 students
  • Huntaado Primary and Junior School Latrines and Rainwater Harvesting Tank – completed to serve 575 students

Updates:

  • March 31, 2012 – This project is now completed!
  • December 30, 2011 – Activities are near completion in Amansie West and Amansie East. The final deep well and the rainwater harvesting system are under construction and community training continues.
  • July 21, 2011 – Two wells have been constructed and two school latrine blocks have also been completed. Water test results confirmed that both water sources are safe for drinking. Some additional disinfection was carried out at the Apawkrom Beposo well and it will be monitored for the future.
