The Ruhinda Women’s Integrated Development Foundation (RWIDF) has completed the last of 48 protected springs throughout Rukungiri District of southwest Uganda.

Word of their success and positive impact on the communities of Rukungiri has reached into neighbouring sub-counties and to Bushenyi District. The demand for safe water supply and sanitation is ever present and RWIDF will now answer the call in Bushenyi District while also completing additional springs in Rukungiri.

Activities:

  • Construction of 15 protected springs
  • Construction of 10 latrines with handwashing
  • Community education, training and outreach to promote good hygiene practices

*Costs include (in Canadian dollars): water quality monitoring, hygiene education activities, water source committee training, project monitoring, reporting & partner coordination for WASH sustainability, all construction, drilling, materials and labour as required.

Updates:

  • July 30, 2012 – 16 protected springs are now completed along with 6 latrines.  The number of sites was adjusted based on needs in the region.  Final training activities are near completion.  The complete list of sites is below and more photos coming soon!
  • November, 2011 – 7 of 15 protected springs and 5 of 10 latrines have been completed! Household visits in Bugangari, Buhunga and Ruhinda Sub-counties took place to assess hygiene and sanitation and 6 more sites for protected springs have been identified.

  4. Nyamiyaga Cell Community – completed to serve 293 people
  5. Katerampungu Primary School – completed to serve 622 students and 107 village residents
  6. Nyakinengo Community – completed to serve 290 people
  7. Ruhita Trading Center Community – completed to serve 301 people
  8. Butembe Primary School & Trading Center – completed to serve 342 people.
  9. Kigimbi A Community – completed to serve 261 people
  10. Omukashasha Trading Center – completed to serve 341 people
  11. Kigimbi B Community – completed to serve 252 people
  12. Kigimbi C Community – completed to serve 211 people
  13. Rugando Primary School – completed to serve 493 people
  14. Nyabikamiro Cell Community – completed to serve 201 people
  15. Nyaruzinga Community – completed to serve 345 people
  16. Omukagando Trading Center – completed to serve 612 people


Latrines:

  1. Rwamagaya Parish – completed to serve 501 people
  2. Burombe Church – completed to serve 622 people
  3. Kashenyi Child Centre – completed to serve 442 people
  4. Kengooma Parents School – completed to serve 462 people
  5. Kicwamba Primary School – completed to serve 607 people
  6. Trinity Community Primary School – completed to serve 413 people.
