Togo – Bentall Kennedy WASH for Schools in Togo

Klikame and Avenou Primary Schools, Lomé, Togo
Project Partner: Action Enfance et Développement Togo (AED Togo)

We are honoured that Bentall Kennedy has once again supported WASH(Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) with Ryan’s Well as part of their Earth Day campaign.

Following their generous support for the Bentall Kennedy Safe Water and Sanitation Project in Uganda completed in early 2010, Bentall Kennedy property owners will be providing over $28,000 in funding support on behalf of their tenants for WASH projects at Klikame and Avenou Primary Schools in Togo.

From Bentall Kennedy  and all of us at Ryan’s Well, thank you for helping us reach our $50,000 goal to complete this much needed project in 2011.

Similar to projects completed at Attikpa (2008), Adakpame (2010) and Agbalepedo (2011) Primary Schools, WASH activities will bring new life to2 schools lacking access to clean water, latrines and handwashing in the area of Lomé, the capital city of Togo. Along with hygiene education activities to raise awareness and engage students and teachers, a source of safe water for daily use helps students to remain in school through the day and improve education. Access to latrines at school encourages better attendance, especially for girls, all leading to a better education and brighter outlook for the future.

This school-based project now provides community taps along with the taps in the school yard so residents in the surrounding area can also gain access to safe water supply.

Activities:

  • Drilling of a borehole with electric pump
  • Construction of an elevated water tank to supply school yard taps, community taps and handwashing stations by gravity flow
  • Construction of handwashing stations
  • Construction of a four stance VIP latrine
  • Establish a school committee of teachers, parents and students for hygiene education and training
  • Provide technician training for maintenance of all installations
  • Health and hygiene activities including drawing and colouring contests and environmental sanitation competition for over 750 students.

*Costs include (in Canadian dollars): water quality monitoring, hygiene education activities, water source committee training, project monitoring, reporting & partner coordination for WASH sustainability, all construction, drilling, materials and labour as required.

Updates:

  • February 24, 2012 – This project is now completed!
