Furthering the success of Phase 1 in 2008/09, this project completed 2wells for the Wamba region, Samburu District of Kenya.

Wamba is a trading centre, approximately 435 km north of the capital city of Nairobi. The Samburu people are traditionally nomadic pastoralists with an economy based primarily on the barter system. Currently, water and sanitaiton is nearly non-existent. Women walk up to 20km each day in search of water.

Any water that is found is most often unsafe, contaminated by livestock and wildlife.

Working with The Samburu Project, we are now able to provide safe water and sanitation for approximately 2,000 people from Wamba!

Activities:

  • Drilling and construction of 2 wells with Afridev handpumps installed and water quality testing by government authorized laboratories
  • Community mobilization activities for training on good hygiene and sanitation practices, latrine construction, establish committees to maintain the wells for the future and to build fencing around the well to protect it from contamination

*Costs include (in Canadian dollars): water quality monitoring, hygiene education activities, water source committee training, project monitoring, reporting & partner coordination for WASH sustainability, all construction, drilling, materials and labour as required.

Updates:

  • February 24, 2012 – This project is now completed! Until now, residents of Margwe Village walked up to 6km and residents of Sordo Namunyak walked up to 8km – one way –  to collect water. Children, especially girls, often missed school because they spent so much time trying to find and collect water.
  • November 17, 2011 – Hydrogeological surveys are complete and well sites for Upper Margwe Village and Sordo Namunyak Community have been identified and constructed. Water is flowing in Upper Margwe and Sordo Namunyak!
