The book, written by Herb Shoveller (Ryan’s great uncle), was released in September 2006 and is published by Kids Can Press. The book exemplifies the unbreakable bond that united these boys from very different backgrounds and illustrates the true story of friendship and compassion in which a simple wish to help others brings focus to the necessities that unite us all.

The book has won several awards including the 2007 Carol D. Reiser Award, 2007 Society of School Librarians International Book Award,  and 2007 Skipping Stones Honors Award. It was nominated for the 2007/2008 Great Lakes Great Books Award Shortlist, 2008 Silver Birch Reading Program, 2008 Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book, 2008 Rocky Mountain Book Award and the 2008 Diamond Willow Award.

Your students have read the book and are interested in learning more – download these free lesson plans to incorporate stories from the book  into your school curriculum. These plans are geared to Grades 1 through 8 and cover  Language Arts, Math, Physical Education, Science and Social Studies. They can also be adapted to meet other levels of learning.

Ryan’s Well documentary

The Ryan's Well documentary is a touching look at Ryan's first trip to Uganda. This beautiful video follows nine-year-old Ryan as he visits the first well he helped build and meet his pen-pal Jimmy Akana for the first time. Ryan's Well made its world premiere on VisionTV on November 30, 2001.
